Week off the Wagon – GABF Edition

A constantly updated list of events happening the week around the 2013 Great American Beer Festival

It’s that time of the year when you’re debating the merits of different pretzel sizes for the trusty pretzel necklace and planning out an group costume with your friends for the Super Bowl of beer, the Great American Be . . . wait, what do you mean you didn’t get tickets? There was a Ticketmaster snafu, you say? All the tickets sold out in record time? Well that just sucks.

Or you did get tickets (you lucky son of a… lovely woman), but want to enjoy the rest of the week as well?

Great American Beer Festival

Great American Beer Festival

Fortunately, Colorado is a thriving hotbed of craft beer, and the state has you covered – no matter if you’re a local who doesn’t want to deal with the absurd lines to sample that one super special beer from Cigar City Brewing, or if you’re an out-of-towner with non-refundable plane tickets and a hotel room who is now looking for booze-soaked ways to spend your four days in the Mile High City.

Fear not, beer lover! Denver off the Wagon will do the heavy lifting and provide you with a complete guide to all beer-related activities going on in Denver during the week of GABF that take place outside of the four GABF sessions. These unique events typically offer just as good of brews without having to stand in line and eat crappy pizza in the convention center.

GABF Beer School: Sensory Training 101

Time – 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Rackhouse Pub – 208 South Kalamath Street, Denver, CO 80223

Barrel-aged sours are an often misunderstood class of beers. Like with the making of a great wine, the blending of the barrels after the aging process is an important part of creating the finished beer. This class is focused on Avery Brewing Company’s Barrel Herder Andy Parker’s approach to blending a particular sour he made earlier this year. During the blending of this particular sour, Andy pulled off some kegs of each of the component parts of that particular beer. He also made a few kegs from barrels that didn’t make the cut in those rounds of blind tasting. During the talk, participants will taste eight beers – the finished sour, the four component parts, and three barrels that didn’t make the cut. Andy will talk about how Avery goes about blending, what each of the component parts added to the beer, why the some barrels didn’t make it. Participants will also be given small measuring cups so that they can use the beers on the table and make their own blends. Only 60 tickets are available via http://beerblending.bpt.me.
