October/September is Christmas Day for the German-American. It’s Oktoberfest time! A time to revel in Old World heritage, polka till you drop, stuff your face full of bratwurst and sauerkraut and, of course, indulge in copious amounts of Germany’s greatest cultural achievement: beer. Yes, Oktoberfest is a grand event indeed, but why confine the Deutsche vivacity to but a few weeks of the year? After the last stein’s been emptied, German people continue to exist and they continue to thirst. There ought to be more excuses to break out the lederhosen.
The German American Chamber of Commerce – Colorado Chapter (GACC – CC) has recognized the problem and solved it with the 18th Annual Biergarten Festival, held in Morrison from July 11th-13th. No longer must the German-American wait ’til Autumn to let loose their inner Rhinelander, not when they can romp about a mountain meadow—beer in hand—in the shining summer sun of Colorado.
With the old Black, Red, and Yellow flapping proudly overhead, guests can enjoy the self-proclaimed “Denver’s largest and most authentic beer garden festival!” by chowing down on German food, listening to German music, watching German dance groups (Schuhplattler), and imbibing German beer. If this event can’t tide you over until Oktoberfest, nothing can. There’s even a bratwurst-eating contest on Saturday because, as Hans and Franz might say, hot dog-eating contests are for “girlie-men.”
Grab your dirndl or lederhosen (seriously, that’s how you fit in at one of these things), brush up on the language (people will actually speak to you in German if you’re dressed authentically enough), and practice your polka steps (the Germans don’t tolerate wallflowers) because this year’s Biergarten Festival promises to be the biggest and best yet!
