Burning CAN 2014: A beer festival of heart, resilience, and homage to Lyons folk

When the rain kept coming day after day after day, the St. Vrain river began to swell. And when the Colorado Flood of September 2013 made its devastating debut, the Town of Lyons was caught in its crosshairs. Oskar Blues Brewery has always been a fundamental member of the community. After all, its founder, Dale Katechis, was one of the pioneers of the burgeoning craft beer scene. The founding of the Lyons brewpub in 1997 and its innovative move in creating the original craft-beer-in-a-can has cemented Oskar Blues in the Craft Beer Halls of Fame. But the flood waters threatened to take it away.

One thing is definite: the town members of Lyons are resilient and bulletproof. They witnessed the destruction of their homes and town. They dealt first-hand with FEMA, a foreign experience that no Coloradoan would ever expect to encounter. But it didn’t destroy their spirit and heart. For the past eight months, Lyons has rebuilt itself and Oskar Blues has been there along the way. The CAN’d Aid Foundation has raised over $600,000 for flood relief since the September floods and the annual Burning Can Beer Fest has provided more than $40,000 for the Town of Lyons Parks & Recreation department and the Colorado Brewers Guild over the past three years. And now, it’s your chance to celebrate the spirit of Lyons and help in the rebuilding efforts. How you ask? By attending one of the best beer fests in the state.

On Saturday, May 31, Oskar Blues Burning CAN Beer Festival returns for its epic third year. CNN listed the Burning CAN beer festival as one of “seven don’t-miss U.S. beer fests” in 2013 — one fact they got right. There will be 50 can-centric breweries pouring over 150 beers from all over the country. Its a celebration of craft beer, outdoor adventure, live music, and the spirit of Lyons, Colorado. The beer festival will kick off at Bohn Park with a VIP session ($45) from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the general session ($30 in advance & $35 day-of) running from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tickets are still available and you can buy them here

There will also be the Lyons Outdoor Games featuring kayaking, rugby, slackline jam, a corn hole tournament, live music, food booths, and family-friendly areas.
