What’s In my Liquor Cabinet – Bourbon & Fernet Leopold “Julep”

I wrote earlier this week about what is not a mint julep, but in preparation for the Kentucky Derby, I thought it would be appropriate to showcase a little cocktail that contains bourbon and pays tribute to the mint. Let me first state my love for the combination of bourbons and amari. Both delicious in their own right, but deadly when put together. Drink enough of these and you will go Wario and surely end up at Taco Bell, spend $14 on yourself only to wake up to realize you didn’t eat a single taco.

Leopold Highland Amaro is a special liqueur that has a nice minty essence, and works quite well to create a julep-esque cocktail when blended with the bourbon and sugar. Add a little lemon juice to brighten things up, and you’ll be on your way (to Taco Bell later).

Bourbon & Fernet Leopold “Julep”

  • 1 oz. Elijah Craig 12yo Bourbon
  • 3/4 oz. Leopold Fernet
  • 3/4 oz. lemon juice
  • 1/4 oz. 2:1 simple syrup

Method: Dry shake all ingredients and fine strain into a julep cup. Carefully pack crushed ice into cup to achieve a “snowcone” effect. Garnish with mint and sip with a straw.
