Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival This Weekend

breckenridge craft spirits fest 2012

Leaf peepers, pay attention. I am currently racing to get this published before the latest edition of Weekend Off The Wagon goes out, because you should be making plans for consuming craft spirits in the mountains and not have any other distractions. The town of Breckenridge is hosting an amazing event highlighting the hooch of 21 local distillers, The Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival. If you attended the Colorado Distillers Fest at the Rackhouse Pub in August, you will recognize many of the craft spirits making an appearance this weekend. However, this festival spans the entire weekend, and is 4,320 feet higher in elevation during one of the most breathtaking times of the year. Booze, golden aspens, perhaps some snow. Yes.

Friday night (tonight) is the Poker Run, a ‘competitive’ review of the craft-distillery offerings at our local taverns, saloons and restaurants. Start at any of the Poker Run venues at 5:00 till the bars close. A different distiller hosts each stop, where you can throw back cocktails, grab a card and a pick up a booklet that tells you where to head next. Play your best poker hand for a chance to win something awesome at Still on the Hill – the Grand Tasting, Sat October 6th.

On Saturday, enjoy the scenery a bit and then take a peek of what they have cooking over at the Breckenridge Distillery Open House. From 2-4pm, master distiller Jordan Via will be showing folks around and exhibiting their Gold Medal-winning spirits. It is a beautiful space, and in addition to tasting some of the goods, you just may learn a thing or two about how much work goes into making great booze.

The main event of the Breckenridge Craft Spirits Fest, Still On The Hill, takes place 4-7pm at the downtown Riverwalk Center adjacent to the Blue River. Sample all manner of spirits and talk with 20+ distillers. Nosh on artisan meats, cheeses, breads and olive oils while drinking creative handcrafted cocktails. Stomp your feets to bluegrass by The Honey Gitters all the while. Of course, this is a 21+ event, and the fee is $20, which includes commemorative glassware. If you don’t make the Grand Tasting, the Honey Gitters move their show to the historic Gold Pan Saloon for a Still on the Hill after-party!  Showtime 9:00.

Stick around for the Hangover Brunch on Sunday, where local restaurants will pour some delicious breakfast cocktails for your pounding head and aching legs that did all that dancing the night before. Select craft spirits in these tasty beverages will help you ease into the day along with some bacon, of course. Breakfast and brunch will be regularly served at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, Columbine Café, Fatty’s, Gold Pan, Jake’s football breakfast buffet, La Francaise, Mi Casa (open @ 10:30 serving @ 11:00), Motherloaded (open @ 11:30), Ollies Pub & Grub (10:00), Park & Main, Quandary Grill, Salt Creek and Spencer’s (breakfast buffet 7:00 – 11:00, lunch at 11:30) at Beaver Run Resort.

Big cheers for the participating distilleries. Can’t wait to get up there for what is sure to be an amazing weekend!  Be sure to check out for more info on tickets, lodging, etc.
