When owner Dave Thibodeau of Ska Brewing Company received a call from Adam Avery of Avery Brewing Company, he didn’t hesitate to say “yes” to a very unique invitation. Avery wanted to get to know his fellow brewers of western Colorado, and thought a bike ride from his brewery in Boulder across the state to Durango, CO, would be a great opportunity to connect with brewery owners and share a lasting adventure. On the third week of July in 2009, two small teams from Ska and Avery hopped on their bicycles, and pedaled together for 6 days through the Colorado Rockies, visiting fellow breweries and pubs along the way. Since then, owners from Oskar Blues Brewery and Sierra Nevada Brewing Company have joined and finished the ~450 mile ride. On this fourth annual journey, Left Hand Brewing Company will also join in and ride the more than 40,000 feet of total elevation gain. Supporting breweries and pubs along the way will be Tommyknocker Brewery in Idaho Springs, Breckenridge Brewery, Eddyline Brewpub in Buena Vista, Brick Oven Pizzeria in Crested Butte, and Ouray Brewing Company.
To commemorate the ride, Avery Brewing Co. also releases an annual batch of the SKAVERY Wheelsucker Wheat, collaboratively conceived with Ska Brewing Company. The brew is a refreshing German-style Hefeweizen with a hazy golden pour and 5.0% abv. The two breweries are also raising funds for Bicycle Colorado, an organization dedicated to improved safety, access, and facilities for bicyclists in Colorado. It was also recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as the model organization for the nation’s other 49 states. The Avery Tap Room in Boulder, CO, will host the Tour de BoulDurango Kickstart Party on Sunday, July 15th, 1-3pm , with proceeds from their silent auction of gear and gift certificates and pints of Wheelsucker Wheat going to Bicycle Colorado. Ska Brewing Company will donate proceeds from its Tour de BoulDurango Finish Party, held on July 21st with live music and draft selections from Avery, Ska, and Left Hand Brewing Company.
