Wine Down the Rail

Colorado Wine Week is fast approaching. And by fast, I mean it starts Sunday, June 3, and lasts until Saturday, June 9. It will be filled with amazing events including a Colorado Wine Cocktail Celebration, Colorado Wine Farmers’ Market, and wait for it…Wine Down the Rail.

Wine Down the Rail is a pretty rad idea. Simply put, you get on the light rail, stop off at one of the participating restaurants within walking distance of the stations, and get your drink on: select Colorado wines on special as part of happy hour. Easy!

Today I figured I’d give you a taste of what to expect. On Saturday, my buddy Jacob Harkins and I decided to take the rail down and visit Pizza Republica. We immediately sat down with Rona VanSlyck, Sommelier and General Manager, and jumped into tasting. Rona & Pizza Republica stepped out of their comfort zone and not only put a few Colorado wines on their menu, but added a keg wine: Bonacquisti’s Vinny No Neck. (Can we take a moment to acknowledge the badassery of the made-for-mobster-movie-name Vinny No Neck? Well played, Bonacquisti.) Vinny No Neck is a beautiful blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. In all of it’s italian style attributes, this American appellation holds no punches. Rona decided to pair Vinny No Neck with a charcuterie/cheese plate for Colorado Wine Week. The appetizer she paired included meats from Il Mondo Vecchio, cheeses from Ft. Collins and Boulder, and bread from Aspen Baking Company–local all the way!

You can expect this and more during Wine Down the Rail on Friday, June 8th. Our friends over at Forkly have laid it out pretty well for you if you’d like to learn more about the happenings during Colorado Wine Week. You can also follow the event on Twitter @coloradowine (or #colwineweek). I hope to see all of you out there giving Colorado wines a taste and showing support. Let’s drink local together.
