Weekend off the Wagon – February 10-12

Go to Boulder for the Danny Williams fundraiser.

Weekend off the Wagon in your inbox, every Friday

Fun things to do seem to come in waves. One weekend, twiddling your thumbs is the most exciting event on the calendar (Note: a beverage with a straw is required for thumb-twiddling). The next, you can’t make a choice of where to go, and end up freaking out and twiddling your thumbs instead. Don’t twiddle your thumbs. Go drink somewhere fun. You can do it.
Track 1:

Friday: Cigar and Wine tasting at Little’s

Saturday: Boulder for the Avery double barrel series release, and then to Backcountry Pizza for the Danny Williams fundraiser.

Sunday: Speed Rack! Watch these ladies make a mess. It’ll be neat.

Track 2:

Friday: Firkin Friday – pick one, any one.

Saturday: Weekend in the mountains. Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Copper Uncorked, and the Miner’s Ball in Leadville.

Sunday: More mountain fun. Do a snow dance too, if you don’t mind.

See below for a detailed list for weekend events. Check out our full calendar to plan your events well into the future.

Scotch & Cigar Tasting

4pm – 7pm

Little’s Wine & Spirits

Tonight, from 4-7pm, we will have not one, but two experts coming into the store to talk to us during our Scotch and Cigar tasting.

Gov Vaughn of The Vine’s Best Wine & Spirits will be in to discuss the scotch, David Tewksbury of Tewksbury & Co., the premier tobacconist located in Writer Square, will be in to give us the run down on cigars. Some stories of their travels in Scotland will be shared as well. As an added bonus, we will be test driving these newfangled glacier rocks: the ice-less chiller. We will have the following seven scotches open, and you will be able to pick four of them to taste. Your choices are:

Bunnahabhain Single Malt 12 year – $55.99 – A non-chillfiltered scotch from the northeastern tip of the island of Islay, this “gentle” scotch has been being distilled in the region since 1881.

Ledaig Single Malt 10 year – $48.99 – Tobermory’s “wonderfully peated” scotch hails from the Isle of Mull, where it’s been distilled and non-chillfiltered since 1798.

Tobermory Single Malt 10 year – $52.99 – Tobermory’s 10 year non-chillfiltered scotch, also from Mull.

Deanston Highland Single Malt 12 year – $53.99 – Deanston’s classic “subtle, reflective and grand” 12 year. They have distilled and non-chillfiltered it since 1785 in using power generated from the River Teith, the very same river from which they source their soft water.

Deanston Highland Single Malt – $31.99 – Deanston’s Virgin-Oak-Aged, non-chillfiltered highland malt scotch.

Gordon Graham & Company’s Black Bottle Blended Scotch Whiskey – $21.99 – This “fresh, fruity and slightly smokey” blend mixes malts from each of the distilleries on the island of Islay.

Deanston’s Scotch Leader Blended Scotch Whiskey – $15.99 – This every day scotch is the “Dewar’s” of the collection and is described as “rich aroma and full-bodied, and touch of sweetness”.

We’s be tasting some smokey scotches and discussing smokey cigars on Friday, so we figured we’d continue on into Saturday with a tasting of smoked beers. We will be trying these three from 3-7pm:

Aecht Original Schlenkerla Maerzen Smokebeer – $5.99 – Utilizing malts smoked over beech wood fires, this is considered one of the premier examples of the German style Rauchbier, or smoked beer.

Victory Brewing’s Otto – $9.49 – A smoked dubbel, this blending of styles was inspired by two trips taken by the brewers, one to Germany in 1987, and a more recent trip to the Orval brewery in Belgium. This melding of the two styles balances the sweet malt of a dubbel with the smokiness of the Rauchbier.

Alaskan’s Smoked Porter 2009 – Priceless, as we only have the one bottle – We decided to bring up our 2009 vintage for a rare beer tasting. Come early, as we only have a single bomber! We do, however, have 8 to sell of the current vintage.
