Happy Holidays from Mountain Sun

The owners of Mountain Sun, Southern Sun, and Vine St. Pub are wishing you a very happy holidays by releasing some special brews beginning today.  These beers look fantastic and I can’t wait to sample them.  Yet another reason that Winter is my favorite season!  Here are the details:

2011 was a great year for us at the Mountain Sun.  To say thanks to all of you, our friends and family, we’re putting together an all-star tap board at all three pubs for Christmas week with some very special Mountain Sun creations you’re not likely to see again anytime soon.  Our holiday gift to you will begin Monday, December 19th when all three pubs open.

Here’s a sampling of some of the most exciting brews hitting all three tap boards:

Galactic Winter Turtle: BRAND NEW RECIPE!

This winter pale ale features a heavy addition of Australian Galaxy hops, complimented by several American hop varieties.  Stronger than an average pale ale but without the bitterness of an IPA, the Galactic Winter Turtle is perfect for the cooler months.  Strong notes of tropical fruit are balanced by a hefty addition of British caramel malt.

7%ABV

Malt: Simpsons All Star Pale, Heritage Crystal

Hops:  Australian Galaxy, Simcoe, Amarillo

Olde Skiddy:

This is our British-style Barleywine. The Olde Skiddy is an example of how very simple ingredients can result in an extremely complex ale. Featuring one hop variety and only two malts, the Skiddy is anything but simple. Rich caramel notes and earthy, floral hops are complemented by an array of dried fruit flavors. Noticeable alcoholic warmth balances the chewy malt profile.

10% ABV

Malt: Maris Otter Pale, Heritage Crystal

Hops: East Kent Golding

Dirty Dark:

This dark brown Belgian-style strong ale has been aging for 6 months in a sour merlot barrel. AT 9.5% ABV, this complex ale hits the palette with a pleasant tartness, woody tannins, and a hint of dark caramel. The Dirty Dark truly shows the magic of the barrel. Before touching the wood, this beer was malty, sweet and slightly heavy on the palate. After undergoing a re-fermentation in the barrel, the result is a dry, sour, ale that lends just a hint of its sweet malty past.

9.5% ABV

Malt: Pilsner, Aromatic, Special B, Extra Dark Crystal

Hops: Magnum, Styrian Golding

Petite Syrah Strong Dark:

This is the same base beer for the Dirty Dark. Instead of aging in a sour barrel, this one went into a freshly emptied Petite Syrah barrel. The result is a beer with striking fruity wine character and notes of oak. The intense flavors of the barrel are balanced by the strong caramel and chocolate notes contributed by the base beer.

Hops: Magnum, Styrian Golding

Chardonnay Barrel Aged Franklin’s Strong Golden:

We added our Franklin’s Strong Golden Ale to a freshly emptied Chardonnay Barrel. Strong notes of oak, apple, and grape combine with the hop and spice character of the original beer, to create a very unique take on a Belgian Golden.
