Boulder Beer Takes Gold at Vine St. Pub Brewers’ Olympics
Tuesday, Sep 20, 2011 at 10:30 am by Sean Buchan
On Saturday, Vine Street Pub & Brewery hosted the Uptown Neighborhood Block Party featuring a Brewers’ Olympics, live bluegrass, grub, and plenty of beer. Ten teams competed in the first annual Brewers’ Olympics: Avery, Oskar Blues, Boulder Beer, Breckenridge, Wynkoop, Mountain Sun, Twisted Pine, Odell, Great Divide, and an amateur team – Mountain Brew. Each of these teams donated 2 kegs of their beer to the event, and all proceeds went to Cancer Support Community Colorado.
Cancer Support Community Colorado’s mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. The non-profit’s mission supports and complements the medical treatment of cancer. Their vision is that no one faces cancer alone. www.cancersupportcolorado.org
DISCLAIMER: No craft beer was harmed during the making of this block party. The beer used in the following events was Rolling Rock. So… yeah, it kind of had it coming.
Here are the five events that helped decide the title:
Relay Tricycle Race
Winner = Odell Brewing Company
The Hand-Cart Obstacle Course
Winner = Boulder Beer Company
Blind-folded Grain Stacking Relay
Winner (Tie) = Wynkoop Brewing Company & Avery Brewing Company
Beer Transfer Competition (No tools or vessels allowed!)
Winner = Oskar Blues Brewery
The Yeast-Filled Balloon Toss
Winner = Breckenridge Brewery
After completing these 5 events, the scores were tallied to find that there was a tie for first. The tie-breaker? Holding two full pitchers of beer with elbows extended and the first person to spill a drop was the silver medalist.
And without further ado, here are the medal winners (handed out by local beer legend Marty Jones):
- Boulder Beer Company
- Breckenridge Brewery
- Great Divide Brewing Company
Didn’t make it out to the events? Well, there’s always next year… or you could just grab a beer and watch this slideshow. Who knows, maybe next year they’ll let a couple of us from the Wagon compete.
