Count the Rings, Twisted Pine Turns 16

On Saturday, Twisted Pine celebrated their 16th anniversary at their Boulder brewery.  The party featured over 20 specialty beers (in addition to their usual offerings), a frozen t-shirt contest, and live music from Danny Shafer, Holden Young and Hot Soup.  One of the specialty beers offered was Bough Breaker Barleywine, Twisted Pine’s 16th Anniversary beer.  Bough Breaker is a strong and rich brew hopped to 120 IBUs with Amarillo hops and definitely worth a try if you love barleywines as much as I do.  Here’s what Twisted Pine owner Bob Baile had to say about Bough Breaker:

We’ve worked hard to get to where we are and as we continue to grow we’re able to brew and bottle more and more unique and original beers, Bough Breaker being the next of this series.  Bough Breaker pours a deep, rich red color with aromas of citrus hops, dark fruit and light toffee.  While delectable to drink the day it’s bottled, Bough Breaker will only become more enchanting with aging and cellaring.

The other specialty beers on tap were spread between 4 tents by category.  Here’s the list:

In 16 years, Twisted Pine has won numerous awards, including 2 GABF Gold Medals (Oak Whiskey Red – 2007 and Twisted Amber – 2006) as well as GABF Silver and Bronze Medals.  In talking with Justin, one of 4 Twisted Pine brewers, I learned that they are currently producing about 3,000 barrels of beer per year.  “Right now, we can’t make enough beer.”  He also told me that they have plans to drop two more 30bbl fermenters and a Brite tank into the brewery in the coming months.  They hope this will bring their production up to about 3,600 barrels/year.  Here are Twisted Pine owner Bob Baile’s thoughts on being in business for 16 years:

We’ve come a long way since 1995, but we will always follow the practices of community support and involvement this company was founded on.  After all, it is our values, culture, staff and ingenuity in brewing that has brought us here today and will sustain us in the future.  On our sweet 16, I raise a glass to these tenets and say, ‘what else can I ask for?’

I had a great time at the event and really enjoyed their beers, especially the Bough Breaker Barleywine.  What do you think about Twisted Pine?  Planning on going to pick up a bottle of Bough Breaker?  Feel free to share your thoughts on their brewery or a few of your favorite TP beers in the comments.
